The Sunday magazine of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin often featured illustrations of local interest. A hex sign is for good luck in the coming harvest, and can be seen on barns and houses especially in the Pennsylvania area, but all over New England as well. Al Gold was a reportorial illustrator of great skill, a student of Maurice Bower, in turn a student of Howard Pyle.
