Parrish, Maxfield: pencil study for The Knave of Hearts
Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966)
Old scholar reading book. “This is the book of...” from Parrish's children's book, The Knave of Hearts.
Graphite pencil on cut wove paper, 5.25 x 6.5" not signed.
This scene must have represented a perfect idyll for Parrish, relaxing on his country estate on a summer's day, surrounded by books. This picture has no real necessity in the Knave of Hearts, but he worked it in to become the world's most elaborate bookplate.
Condition is very good: the paper tone may have been lighter once; hinged, matted; framed in narrow gilt moulding together with signed proof sheet in fine condition.
Provenance: Parrish carried on a lively correspondence with science-fiction artist Hannes Bok for some 30 years, during which Bok acquired preliminary drawings, and signed prints of Parrish's work. The drawing and print came from the estate of Clarence Peacock, Bok's companion. [Parrish rarely signed prints.]
