Haddon Sundblom (1899-1976)

Children in front of a school. “What should a schoolchild’s breakfast be?”

Magazine advertisement for Cream of Wheat breakfast cereal, 1926;

Oil on canvas, 32 x 22" not signed.

Condition: Very good overall: cleaned and varnished ca. 2008 and has new stretchers; there were no losses. Frame is 2" wide milled ebonized wood.

Provenance: From the archives of Nabisco, and Kraft Foods; this work bears Cream of Wheat catalogue # 374(a).

A good example of Sundblom's early work, which used a light alla prima touch, well-composed vignetting, and a high-key, saturated palette, like his muse, fellow-Swede Anders Zorn.
