35. Frederic R. Gruger
Frederic R. Gruger (1871-1953)
Woman bringing food to young man in yard.
Magazine story illustration: “Early Settlers”, author: Curlin Reed,
Saturday Evening Post, October 12, 1935, page 18;
Carbon pencil & wash, 12.5 x 11" signed upper right.
A typical later drawing, in which Gruger pushes the carbon around with a stump, and modulates that with ink wash to achieve subtle gradations of greys. The suggestion of an overgrown garden is complete, without the artist specifying the plants, which would have distracted from the characters.Condition: Very good overall: board still light in color; no abrasion. Archivally matted; framed in narrow, ebonized wood.
