Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911)

Head of man in tricorn hat facing left.

Baron von Steuben drilling American recruits at Valley Forge in 1778

Study for mural at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, 1910-1911;
The mural was Abbey's last major work before his death, and technically, the painting shows the influence of his friend John Singer Sargent, being considerably freer than his typical drawings.

Despite the claims of the label, the work is oil on canvas, 12.3 x 9" illegibly signed and dated lower right.
Condition overall is good: the varnish has dulled, and the signature abraded; the frame is heavy, hand-carved, gilt, then pickled, and altogether a bit much.

Provenance: Widow of the artist; American Art Association; W.G. Peckham Collection; John Clymer.

Other photos: reproduction of mural, and matching detail; the label verso; the work is framed.
