Unpublished cover intended for The New Yorker, ca. 1928.
Tempera, 13.5 x 9.8" signed lower right. Condition is very good: the paperboard shows some toning with age. Archivally matted and has a narrow stained-wood moulding.
Provenance: The family of the artist.
The artist is playing two tropes against each other: the “Eustice Tilley”-type of the proper aristocratic gentleman, and the bomb-throwing anarchist. We don't know if this toff is just reliving a mischievious childhood, or has something more subversive in mind.
