31. Margaret Trafford
Two women having tea in garden.
Gag cartoon, probably Life Magazine, ca. 1920's;
“We have to pollinate the amaryllis... they won't do it themselves”
Pen & ink, charcoal, 8.25 x 9.5" signed lower left. Very good overall: light toning with age. The original mat has caption and notations; there is also a new mat, but this item is not framed.
The joke relies on two stereotypes: the earth-mother type and the prim Bostonian, and for the latter, it was considered improper to speak about anything remotely sexual. [And the earth-mother is, by implication, wondering how the Bostonians themselves ever propagated.]
