Herbert Paus (1880-1946)

A touring car in southern France. ‘Vacation Touring’

Preliminary sketch for magazine cover, Every Week;
publisher: (Associated Sunday Magazines), ca. 1912;

Gouache and graphite, 4.8 x 3.6" signed in lower margin.
Condition is very good; gilt-beveled and silk-covered mat with a narrow gilt moulding.

The artist wrote “Vacation touring, etc.” in the lower margin as a note to the art editor at Every Week magazine, J. Thomson Willing.

Paus's work became bolder and more graphic later, but at this early stage of his career, he seems to have been influenced mostly by Frank Brangwyn, assembling his pictures out of jewel-like points of color highlighting a tight pencil underdrawing.
